Abstract

The article analyzes police statistics on motor vehicle thefts in Chile between 2005 and 2022. A distinction was made between vehicle thefts involving violence or intimidation and those in which there was no violence or intimidation. Following the recommendations of specialists, instead of calculating the crime rate per 100,000 inhabitants, it was calculated in relation to the size of the vehicle fleet. Two conclusions were reached: vehicle theft in general in Chile does not seem to show a sustained increase over time, but there is a clear increase in violent motor vehicle theft. The data analyzed seems to support the hypothesis that Chile has not necessarily become a more dangerous place for motor vehicles; however, it has become a more dangerous place for people in the context of vehicle theft.
