Abstract

The purpose of this study is to use crime analysis and mapping as a fundamental tool for the formulation of public security policies in Mexico, with a particular focus on crime in a neighborhood located in western Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. According to statistics from the National Survey of Victimization and Perception (ENVIPE) on Public Safety in 2022, 21.1 million victims over the age of 18 were registered in Mexico, with a crime prevalence rate of 22,587 per 100,000 inhabitants (INEGI,2022). Although this figure shows a decrease with respect to 2021, the situation in Nuevo León is worrisome, as it ranks as the seventh least peaceful state. Significant increases stand out in indicators such as homicides, family violence, kidnappings, human trafficking, and sexual and gender-based violence.

A previous study in the Colinas de San Bernabé neighborhood indicated that the actions taken did not significantly improve the social environment. An exploratory walk was carried out in Fomerrey 25, obtaining two maps using Google's My Maps and ArcGIS with INEGI 2020 cartographic data. The first map shows the location of the study area and 158 georeferenced points of the exploratory security march. Crime analysis and mapping is considered crucial to strengthen public policies for crime prevention and investigation.
